I found all the articles particularly intriguing , especially the "Universal Design for Learning", this model recognized that while all children enter into the classroom with knowledge, they come in on varying levels and learn in different modalities. This model focuses on the individual child and their needs, the lessons are tailored to meet that particular child's learning needs which is vital. Additionally I found it interesting that within the discussion of creating adaptations for some students, all of the population benefits from it, which is true, when I think about the visual learner viewing an educational clip from youtube , the other children can add a visual element to their armory of tools , which will in turn foster their development.
While reading these articles, I thought about when I was in school and having problems with math, perhaps if these accommodations were made , I could have learned to view math in a different manner. Often times children become frustrated or feel ostracized when they have difficulty with a particular subject. I am a visual learner and if I would have seen math done on a smart board or used other computer programs to solve math problems, it would have assisted my learning in a positive manner. Along with embracing the U.D.L method educators are changing their attitudes and approaches toward teaching, since the lesson is being adapted to the individual students needs it is allowing teachers to differentiate their instruction and creating a collaborative effort with the students. The students are being actively involved in their own learning process which is key. The students are able to intrinsically determine what is successful for their learning and what isn't , this will assist them in the long run, during their independent studying. I hope more schools adopt the U.D. L model in their communities.
