Blogs, Wikis and professional development

When reading Bill Ferriter’s article about Blogs and Wikis I could instantly relate. Having sat through many professional development meetings, I often wondered why I was there and whether any one would even notice if I left. One of the most problematic and frustrating things I have encountered in these professional development meetings is that the information is focused on older grades. I feel like there is an invisible line drawn in the sand where technology can only be incorporated in grades x and above, with my class falling below that line. My personal experience has showed me that educators are reluctant to use technology in these younger classrooms because they assume students and teachers alike won’t use the technology properly thus wasting money. As a teacher who has previously taught Kindergarten and who looks to teach similar grades in the future, how do I advocate for myself and for my class?

In trying to answer my own question, I look back to Bill Ferriter’s article. Not only can I create a blog to strengthen my use of technology, but I can also use it to broaden my support system among fellow teachers. I may be met with resistance in my own school, but I can almost certainly find support elsewhere. That is what technology and the internet has afforded us, the ability to make connections to people and ideas that would have not come up had this technology not been available to us.
