UDL Podcast

Listening to the podcast in which David Rose addresses Universal Design in the classroom opened my eyes to the importance of using technology to help incorporate Universal Design in the classroom. Rose points out that new technologies are broadening what we can do in the classroom in terms of our teaching and student learning. He specifically discusses how technology helps us to offer our students multiple means of representation, expression and engagement.

As I listened to Rose and thought about my classroom, I realized how much more I could offer my students by simply using the technology around me. For example, in order to help those students who struggle with written text, simply changing the font or size of the text may make a world of a difference. In addition, Rose explained that we have to be particularly careful to make sure our students are being evaluated and assessed with materials that accurately assess their ability. For example, when assessing a child with dyslexia in math, a teacher may think about using a program which reads the text aloud to a child so that the assessment is truly evaluating his or her mathematics ability.
