Describe the Living Conditions

The living conditions were very harsh in the steerage section of the ship. We were forced to live in tight quarters and were given no privacy. Because of this, many people caught diseases from others, especially because there were no places to bathe, or even places to use the bathroom.

The only positive aspect of being in steerage was that we got to know other passengers that were also in steerage. We built relationships with some and will be in touch with them once we are living in New York.
