Reflection on Course
This course has allowed me to understand the benefit of using technology in the classroom and how it can help, the various learning styles that teachers encounter daily especially in underserved schools where there is a high concentration of minorities. I even challenged myself by playing a video game to understand the significance of utilizing technology and how games help in literacy development. What I learned after playing Sims 2 with my son again is that utilizing technology especially video games in the classroom can provide discussion and assist students to develop a higher level of thinking, reading and writing for their future success. My goal as a teacher is to incorporate the value of technology as an educational mechanism that can change and evolve over time. Technology, video games and Google Earth to name a few are effective if approached from their content, concept and design principle that teaches virtual and real world life experiences can include to help students understand the relevance of the subject being learned. What I have learned in my 3 years of teaching is that students spend an exorbitant amount of hours on computers especially social networks and playing videos games. This same amount of time can be funneled into student’s active and mindful learning through the usage of technology, blogs and video games in the classroom, which I now understand the implication in improving literary in all content areas. This is important if we are to catch up with other nations in the 21st century as their students are surpassing United States students in all areas of education. It is my hope that administrators would invest in more technology, i.e., laptops for all students, Smart Boards for interactive learning, video games for literacy development, and blogging to develop higher order thinking through discussion and debate on a topic. Technology can teach diversity and breaks away from the rudimentary textbooks, which many students find uninteresting. In my final assessment of technology it is the only logically approach for students to learn new cognitive skills in the age of technology, which will make learning engaging and relevant to students.
