I appreciated how Bob explained the process he took his students through-intense field work followed by classroom application. I am currently working with other social studies and ELA teachers to come up with field experiences for these subjects.
Something that surprised me or maybe served as more of a reminder was the suggestion that a solid foundation needs to be built and students need to have a good understanding of the concepts prior to bringing in technology. In this way, technology was not really used as a means to deliver content or introduce students to content. Instead, it was a tool students used to process content once they had a firm grasp of it.
I think I too often try to think of how technology can be used to deliver content, how I can use it to teach students material. I believe that I need to focus more on allowing students to work with technology once they have a firm grasp of material.
